Many medical facilities throughout the state have made the decision to host students from STLSP's Phlebotomy or Clinical Medical Assisting program--not only does this offer student valuable contact with patients and practicing clinical staff, but it also gives benefit to the facilities by offering them a potential hiring pool, increasing their community involvement, and giving them the opportunity to set student expectations of best practices from the beginning.
STLSP students attend externship for 40-hours and are guided through their experience by staff members from your facility who work in similar positions. STLSP carries full liability insurance on students during the time they are in attendance and maintains legal agreements with facilities that set clear standards for the process of assigning students and making sure every student is compliant with the regulations of your facility before arriving. Although the expectations of sites differ, STLSP is happy to set up whatever requirements your facility is comfortable with, including:
- Background Checks
- Immunization Records
- Proof of Negative TB Test
- Proof of Health Insurance
- Physical Assessment
Students do not progress to externship until they earn satisfactory grades on both knowledge and skills assessments, including pass/fail elements related to clinical safety and procedure. STLSP's partner sites always have the right to request a student to be removed if they don't feel the student is a good fit, although we find that this does not happen often and most sites are pleased with the readiness and positive attitude of STLSP students.
